The choice before the new Trump administration is clear. We can have innovation now and lower costs over time. Or we can impose price controls now and bring innovation to a halt.

Biden administration is proposing that Medicare and Medicaid cover Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs for weight loss. It’s unclear what the Trump administration will do with its predecessor’s proposal.

Democrats may be trying to goad Medicare under Trump into slapping price controls on GLP-1s — something progressives have long wanted to do. But if the federal government imposes price caps on weight-loss drugs, they may be among the last big medical breakthroughs the country sees. Such price controls would destroy the incentive for scientists and drugmakers to develop new drugs.
